Tussah Silk

Tussah silk, also known as “wild silk” or “Kosa silk,” is a type of silk fabric produced from the cocoons of several species of silk moths, primarily Antheraea mylitta and Antheraea proylei. Unlike mulberry silk, which is derived from domesticated silkworms, Tussah silk is sourced from wild silkworms that inhabit the forests of India and other Southeast Asian countries.
The fabric has a slightly coarse texture compared to mulberry silk, giving it a rustic charm. It often features a beautiful, irregular pattern of short fibers and small, naturally occurring slubs, which enhance its uniqueness. Tussah silk comes in a range of colors, including shades of beige, brown, and gold.
One of the notable characteristics of Tussah silk is its breathability. The fabric allows air circulation, making it comfortable to wear in warmer climates. It also possesses moisture-wicking properties, keeping the wearer cool and dry. Tussah silk is highly valued for its durability and strength, making it a preferred choice for creating sturdy garments and accessories.
In recent years, there has been an increased focus on promoting ethical and sustainable fashion. Tussah silk aligns well with these values as it is sourced from wild silkworms without causing harm to the insects. Moreover, its production supports rural livelihoods, providing income to artisans engaged in sericulture and silk weaving.

Balkal Silk

Balkal silk is made from the peduncle (stem) of the cocoon rather than the cocoon itself! Once the butterflies have left the cocoon, the stems are collected. The peduncles of Tussah silk cocoons are boiled in an alkaline solution and opened up. This technique is a brilliant example of the zero-waste philosophy in textile manufacturing. Balkal silk is spun to create beautiful natural dark brown yarn which is then used to weave highly versatile, breathable fabric.

Katiya Silk

Katiya is an Ahimsa Silk fabric that originated from West Bengal, India. It is a rough handloom fabric made by weaving yarns spun out of broken waste or leftover fibres from hatched Tussar silkmoth cocoons along with yarn like Tussar, Matka Ahimsa Silk or Khadi, as warp and weft or vice-versa in a handloom. Spun by hand, the material is indigenous to Bengal and is very rare outside of Bengal. The main component of Katiya is the waste/leftover broken fibres from the hatched cocoons of Tussar silkmoth, which is handspun into yarn to make the fabric. A variety of other yarns like Matka, Cotton, Khadi, and Tussah may be woven into the raw coarse fabric either in the warp or weft. As a result, it produces a very unique and wonderfully rich texture. Ketya Silk is an Ahimsa Silk (or peace silk) as it is made of leftover fibres from cocoons that the moths were allowed to hatch from.

Tussah Silk

A two-sided weave with two different tones of the natural colour of tussah silk one in Ivory and the other in a golden beige colour. The fabric can be used from both sides. It gives a very royal look.
