Muga Silk

Muga silk is a special and prized variety of silk produced in the state of Assam in India. Derived from the silkworm Antheraea assamensis, Muga silk is known for its golden-yellow hue, natural sheen, and durability. The silkworm feeds on the leaves of the som and soalu plants, which contributes to the distinct golden colour of the silk.

Muga silk holds cultural significance in Assam and is traditionally used to create exquisite traditional Assamese garments like Mekhela Chador and other ceremonial attire. One remarkable feature of Muga silk is its ability to enhance its shine and texture with each wash, making it a highly valued and durable fabric.

Due to its unique characteristics, Muga silk has gained recognition beyond regional borders and is sought after for its quality and aesthetic appeal. The silk industry in Assam plays a crucial role in supporting local artisans and preserving the rich cultural heritage associated with Muga silk production.
